Alicia Keys

Alicia J. Augello-Cook (born January 25; 1981); professionally known as Alicia Keys; is an American R&B; pop; soul; and neo soul singer-songwriter; pianist; and actress. Keys has sold over 29 million albums worldwide and has won numerous awards; including eleven Grammy Awards; seventeen Billboard Music Awards; and three American Music Awards. Keys has a vocal range of a dramatic contralto; spanning three octaves. Keys cites Stevie Wonder as her biggest influence. She’s often called the Princess of Soul. Keys’ debut album Songs in A Minor was a worldwide success; selling over eleven million copies; and received five Grammy Awards in 2002; with Keys winning Best New Artist and also Song of the Year for “Fallin”.

Carry That Weight

“Carry That Weight” is a song by The Beatles. Released on Abbey Road and part of the long, climactic medley that closes the album, it features vocals from all four of The Beatles (a rarity in their songs). It is preceded by “Golden Slumbers”, and it segues into “The End”. The middle bridge, featuring brass instruments, electric guitar and vocals, reprises the beginning of “You Never Give Me Your Money”, but with different lyrics. The ending also reprises the arpeggiated guitar motif from the end of that track, similar to the figure featured prominently in the George Harrison written tracks “Here Comes the Sun” and “Badge” (co-written by Harrison and Eric Clapton). One interpretation[by whom?] is that the title (and main lyric) is a reference to two people, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. In McCartney’s view, if Lennon allowed the Beatles to break up, he would be “carrying the weight” for that.

Final Fantasy IV (???????????IV ,Fainaru Fantaji Fo?) is a console role-playing game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) in 1991 as a part of the Final Fantasy series. The game was originally released for the Super Famicom in Japan, but has been ported with minor changes to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System as well as by TOSE to the Sony’s PlayStation, Bandai’s WonderSwan Color, and Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance. In May 2007, Square Enix announced that it was developing a remake of the game for the Nintendo DS. The game was re-titled “Final Fantasy II” during its initial release in North America due to it being the second of the series released there, but later localizations used the original title. The player takes the role of Cecil, a Dark Knight from the kingdom of Baron, on his journey to save the world from the evil Golbez. Struggling to prevent Golbez from acquiring powerful Crystals, Cecil learns of his heritage and travels through three realms to battle Golbez’s minions. His lover, best friend, and other warriors join him for the adventure. Final Fantasy IV introduced innovations that became staples of the Final Fantasy series and role-playing games in general. Its “Active Time Battle” system was used in six subsequent Final Fantasy games. Its character-driven plot, use of the new technologies (such as Mode 7) and critically acclaimed score by Nobuo Uematsu has prompted critics to consider Final Fantasy IV one of the greatest games of all time.

Butterfly Kisses

“Butterfly Kisses” is the title of an American pop song which gained popularity in 1997, when three different artists all released it as singles. The song was co-written and originally recorded by gospel artist Bob Carlisle, who wrote it as a tribute to his daughter. Carlisle’s rendition of the song entered five different Billboard format charts in the United States, becoming a Number One single on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song also received a Dove Award for Song of the Year, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Country Song. It is also Carlisle’s only chart single. Despite the huge airplay Carlisle’s version was receiving on pop radio stations, it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band that formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. While the group has gone through several lineup changes, The Smashing Pumpkins consisted of Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar), James Iha (guitar/backing vocals), D’arcy Wretzky (bass guitar/backing vocals), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums/percussion) for most of the band’s recording career. Disavowing the punk rock roots shared by many of their alt-rock contemporaries, the Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, arena rock, shoegazer-style production and, in later recordings, electronica. Frontman Billy Corgan is the group’s primary songwriterhis grand musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band’s albums and songs, which have been described as “anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan’s nightmare-land”. The Smashing Pumpkins broke into the musical mainstream with their second album, Siamese Dream (1993). The group built its audience with extensive touring and their follow-up, the double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. With approximately 18.25 million albums sold in the United States alone, The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s. However, internal fighting, drug use, and diminishing record sales hampered the band and led to a 2000 break-up. In April 2006, the band officially announced that it was reuniting and recording a new album. Returning members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin were joined by musicians Jeff Schroeder (guitar/vocals), Ginger Reyes (bass/vocals), and Lisa Harriton (keyboard/vocals) in 2007 to tour in support of their new release, Zeitgeist.

Herbie Hancock

Herbert Jeffrey “Herbie” Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is a jazz pianist and composer. His music embraces elements of rock and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. As part of Miles Davis’s “second great quintet”, Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was one of the primary architects of the “post-bop” sound. Later, he was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk. Yet for all his restless experimentalism, Hancock’s music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs “cross over” and achieved success among pop audiences. Herbie’s best-known solo works include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man” (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaria), “Maiden Voyage”, “Chameleon”, and the singles “I Thought It Was You” and “Rockit”. His 2007 tribute album, “River: The Joni Letters” won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album to win the award.
