Steve Kuhn (born in Brooklyn, NY March 24, 1938) is an American jazz pianist, composer and leader of the trio.
He began studying piano at age five and studied under legendary Boston piano teacher Chaloff Margaret, mother of jazz baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff who taught him Russian style piano. At an early age, he began to improvise classical music. As a teenager, he played in jazz clubs in the Boston area, giving concerts with artists like Coleman Hawkins, Vic Dickerson, Chet Baker, and Serge Chaloff. He graduated from Harvard and attended the Lenox School of Music, where he was linked with other jazz masters like Ornette Coleman and future Don Cherry, with faculty support, which included George Russell, Gunther Schuller, and Bill Evans.This has allowed Mr. Kuhn to play, study and create with some of the most innovative jazz improvisations of the avant-garde composition, and ended up joining a group with the trumpeter Kenny Dorham for a long time. He also played with artists such as Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Oliver Nelson, Gary McFarland, Ron Carter, Scott LaFaro, Harvie Swartz, the singer Sheila Jordan, Billie Drummond, David Finck and Miroslav Vitous. From 1967 to 1971 Kuhn moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he worked with his own trio in Europe. In 1971, Kuhn returned to New York and formed a quartet, but continued to play shows in Europe, and appearing at the Newport Jazz Festival.In his youth, Mr. Kuhn was known as avant-garde pianist (but not the New Thing ).
